4 Aspects to Consider When Hiring a Kitchen San Diego Contractor

Apr 9th, 2011 Jessica Peloski

With the current economy, those who have been able to purchase a new home at fantastic deals throughout San Diego County may find that some remodeling is necessary to get the property in better shape, and typically the first room under consideration is the kitchen. Even though remodeling your kitchen tends to be one of the largest investments you can make in upgrading your home, it can also give your home and property a great boost in value, and is the room where most come to congregate, eat, and enjoy the most.

Since this is one of the biggest investments you can make in your home, many individuals get anxious and a bit nervous in their plight to find the right company and installers for the job. This anxiety is normal for many since most people in San Diego know others, whether they be friends or coworkers which have taken on such a project only to have it quickly become a nightmare. Asking the right questions and adhering to the following steps will help make this exciting, but sometimes nerve racking project a great success while maintaining budget and schedule.

1. Thoroughly Interview Remodeling Companies and Contractors. Find a variety of San Diego kitchen contractors to interview from local advertisements, and if possible, visit their showrooms so you can see and touch first hand the quality of work. Most kitchen and bathroom remodeling companies and showrooms are located in the Miramar area of Central San Diego County so it is convenient to visit many showrooms within a single day. Talk to each company and get a feel if they would give you the attention you deserve and if they are attentive and friendly. Also make sure they listen to your ideas instead of just making blanket and expensive recommendations.

2. Make Sure Your Contractor is Licensed and Insured. All work performed on your home in the State of California and County of San Diego requires your contractor be licensed. You can verify this by visiting the Contractors State Licensing Board of California to evaluate their license type, status, and current issues if any. It is also a good idea to ensure the company is insured and bonded for your protection.

Ask if your contractor will be providing insurance as part of their bid or if it is a separate line item costing you more money. You may want to work with a different company if the insurance isn't included. You can also check with your home owners insurance company to see if your remodel is covered under your existing policy.

3. Evaluate Past Experience. You typically want to evaluate the contractor's past experience with other kitchen remodeling companies throughout the County. If possible, get a portfolio of past work with completed pictures and speak with other current and past customers from that company before entering into any agreement. Ask tough and pointed questions to be able to make the best decision. It is also a good idea to speak with the San Diego Better Business Bureau to evaluate a company's status and see if there are any current or past complaints.

4. Signing the Contract. For your protection, always have a written agreement which thoroughly outlines the scope of work to be performed with milestones, cost, and schedule. You do not want any budget surprises. Sit down with your potential kitchen contractor to review all aspects and ask proper questions ahead of time.

A beautiful new kitchen in your San Diego home is a challenging process but with proper due diligence from the initial stages of your project, you can help ensure a successful remodel to enjoy for years and years.
